  • Up to 60 percent of people who participate in Eastern style meditation techniques suffer side effects
  • Although most media coverage of these trendy practices is positive, researchers want more studies on their negative effects
  • Mania, hallucinations, and psychosis "are known side effects of deliberately altered mental states"
  • A researcher at the University of Surrey: media reports of benefits [of meditation and mindfulness] "are often inflated … whereas studies that do not discover significant benefits rarely pick up media interest"
  • An altered state of consciousness can occur as a result of high fevers, drugs, coma, sleep or oxygen deprivation, or Eastern meditation practices (including TM, yoga, mindfulness meditation, centering prayer, hypnosis, etc.); typical side effects include "psychotic-like delusional thinking, panic attacks, insomnia, personality changes". Loss of concentration, confusion, impaired coping skills, depression can also occur.
